Tech + Journalism: HackHackers Media Party @ Buenos Aires

We recently took part in the 3rd annual HackHackers Media Party in Buenos Aires, an event that combines Technology with journalists from all around the world.

The goal was to share, learn, and create new ways to consume and produce media.  We were mesmerized by some of the trends in this space, from how to automatically extract facts from an article, to how to use D3.js.  Projects ranging from complex open data visualization to digital journalism tools to internet freedom platforms were presented to the conference attendees.  Some of our favorite projects are listed below:

Hyperaudio is web platform that allows journalist and video editors to add transcripts to internet video and remix final cuts as easy as editing in a notepad.

Cargografias (post-graph) provides a timeline of posts for every politician in the history of Argentina, allowing voters to research candidates prior to voting.

Outernet bypasses censorship, ensures privacy, and offers a universally-accessible information service at no cost by delivering read-only internet content through satellite data broadcasting. It’s the modern version of shortwave radio, or think of it as BitTorrent from space.

WatchUp is a Netflix-like news service with a polished interface.  Their goal is to decentralize the way we consume news.

Quien Paga? (Who is Paying?) is an elegant data-hack from Uruguayan developers that tracks all the money donated to political campaigns, giving insight to who is supporting each politician.

Journalism has always been the voice of the people, and by mashing in the latest technology trends conferences like the HackHackers Media Party have the potential to impact people around the globe.
